Essay — My experience job-hunting while taking care of my kids and dealing with all that’s happening in the world has been an insightful and at times difficult journey.

Job hunting as a fresh graduate made me feel like I was on an adventure, a trip through twisting canyons, down paths I thought would lead me somewhere, yet they just kept on going or circled back on themselves. I reached dead ends, got lost a couple times, and went back to the start.

To top it all off, my four kids were out of school and their little space rocket bodies were ready to blast off into summer, regardless if I was ready or not!

I thought I had a job for the summer, but then it completely fell through. Looking back, the vague communications and question-dodging should have clued me in, but I was full of hope and excitement.

Thus, I had to start searching and applying for jobs all over again. Here are some tips to help you sane when you find yourself applying for jobs:

Don’t spend your whole day on your phone or computer

It’s tempting to just sit and scroll Craigslist or Indeed or all the other job sites out there, hoping that a keyword will jump out at you and you’ll find the perfect job to apply to.
